From Gandhi to guns: An Indian woman explores the NRA convention

April 29, 2017

Atlanta (CNN)Guns are not a part of the culture of my homeland, except perhaps for the occasional Bollywood movie in which the bad guy meets his demise staring down the wrong end of a barrel. The Indians may have succeeded in ousting the British, but we won with Gandhian-style civil disobedience, not a revolutionary war. Trump: Eight-year assault has come to end I grew up not knowing a single gun owner, and even today India has one of the strictest gun laws on the planet. Few …

Progressives see reason for optimism after near-win in Georgia

April 19, 2017

Atlanta (CNN)Democrat Jon Ossoff’s progressive grassroots-fueled campaign will fall just short of the 50% he needed to avoid a runoff, CNN projected early Wednesday morning, in a closely watched special election for a House seat in reliably Republican Georgia. But even though their potential psychic victory has been muted somewhat, the left is still calling the result — one that leaves Ossoff with momentum headed into a June 20 runoff against Republican Karen Handel — a win. …

Democrats needed a win. They didn’t get one in Georgia.

April 19, 2017

(CNN)For the second time in a week, Republicans dodged a potential political cataclysm. Last Tuesday it was a special election in Kansas where the Republican candidate did just enough to win. This Tuesday it was another special election — this one in suburban Atlanta — where a slew of GOP candidates managed to keep Democrat Jon Ossoff just under 50%, forcing a June runoff. An Ossoff victory, which nearly came to pass despite the long Republican tradition in the district, would have …

This skyscraper is out of this world — literally

March 30, 2017

Atlanta (CNN)Feeling too fancy for normal earth-bound existence? A new skyscraper concept would elevate your living situation — literally. Clouds Architecture Office has unveiled plans for a futuristic skyscraper dubbed the “Analemma Tower.” The building would hover majestically above the ground because it would be attached — wait for it — to an actual asteroid, in space, that is forcibly put into orbit around the earth. If that’s not enough to digest, …

A huge sigh of relief on health care

March 29, 2017

(CNN)As House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the Republican health care bill from voting, I could almost hear the giant sigh of relief from Atlanta and across the nation’s health care establishment. Hidden in the nooks and crannies of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) was a provision to eliminate $1 billion in disease prevention funds from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Those cheers I imagine I hear right now in Atlanta are huzzahs from the CDC headquarters. …
