Christina Aguilera Poses Makeup-Free In Raw Photoshoot And People Don’t Recognize Her

If you were to document the rise and fall of celebrity culture, you’d probably pinpoint the moment of decline as 2007. It was a year that practically exploded with scandal, from Britney Spears’ iconic meltdown to the drink-drive arrests of it-girl Paris Hilton and troubled star, Lindsay Lohan.

It was also the year of Jamie-Lynn Spears infamous teenage pregnancy which was only marginally eclipsed by the manic public interest in High School Musical stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens relationship. It was the year that the Kardashian’s began to build their empire, as Steve Jobs simultaneously set his sights on world domination with the release of the first iPhone (bye, bye, BlackBerry).

This moment, combined with the rise of social media (goodbye MySpace, hello Facebook) was pivotal in changing celebrity culture as we knew it. With every individual on the street suddenly armed with a phone capable of taking decent pictures, celebrities became much less frivolous with their extracurricular activities. One thing that became practically extinct as this new world dawned was makeup-free celebrities.

Suddenly stars stopped stepping out without their slap, preferring to conceal their face from the cameras that inevitably awaited them on a simple walk to the shops.

Thus, snaps of celebrities sans makeup plastered across the front pages of gossip magazines became a thing of the past. So it was quite the culture shock when pop icon Christina Aguilera donned the cover of PAPER magazine completely bare-faced.

Throughout her career, the ‘Dirrty’ singer has always worn a thick layer of makeup. In fact, sometimes she wore more cosmetics than clothes.

But in true Christina style, she was totally unapologetic about her quirky look, which consisted of several questionable outfits. “I just get really bored with sticking to the norm and having the proper conservative image. That’s just so not me,” a 21-year-old Christina told MTV in 2001.

However, over the years the ‘Beautiful’ singer has changed her wild ways. The thick black eyes were slowly replaced by a slick of red lipstick, complimenting the Marilyn Monroe-inspired look which she gravitated towards after her dreadlocked days in the early ’00s.

Now a mother-of-two, Christina has totally Stripped back her look. Taking things Back to Basics she has now embraced her fuller frame and freckles, and we don’t think she’s ever looked more fabulous.

“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage,” she told PAPER magazine.

“I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”

But before you get to thinking that Christina’s next album will be a medley of hippie, self-love songs, (complete with a butchered remaster of her 2002 hit ‘Beautiful’) think again, for the 37-year-old star is in no way boycotting makeup.

“I mean, I’m a girl that likes a beat face, let’s not get it twisted,” she comically told PAPER, showing a flash of the old Christina that we all fell in love with back in the ’00s.
